Top Goalkeeper Saves

Credit; here

Over the last week, I've written about Sam Allardyce getting sacked, Spurs' chances of Champions League success and others, including my favourite top flight goals from the UK and some funny moments.

Now, it's the turn of the goalkeepers.

Rather than cringe at their mistakes, which I'm sure enough Christmas DVD's will do, I've decided to bring the best saves from the last couple of years and two that I could not leave out.

I'd hate to leave one of the Premier League's more sporadic goalkeepers off the list, but this is one of the better moments from Fabien Barthez's Manchester United career to get us underway.

Fabien Barthez v LIVERPOOL

Next comes from this UEFA Cup tie, where FC Basel are playing Nancy.

With the game heading for a draw, Nancy were awarded a penalty and this happened...

Mladen Petric v NANCY

Yes, that was Hamburg and Croatia striker, Mladen Petric, saving a penalty. He did look to be off his line...

Now, back to the keepers and below is a fantastic effort from Bolton Wanderers stopper, Jussi Jaaskelainen against now team mate, Gary Cahill, who played for Aston Villa.

This was the best video I could find, so bare with it until 33 seconds...

Jussi Jaaskelainen v ASTON VILLA

Consider whether Peter Schmeichel can actually see the ball in the next clip. I don't think so and, if he can't, this is in an incredible left handed save to deny Everton.

Peter Schmeichel v EVERTON

This list would not be the same without some South American influence.

Whether or not you remember Rene Higuita, this acrobatic save is a fantastic spectacle and, whilst it's not the best save, it always brings a smile.

Rene Higuita v ENGLAND

Now for a more recent one. Only this weekend, this save from Craig Gordon handed Sunderland all three points at home to Bolton. Perhaps he shouldn't have been given a chance to save it, but it's fantastic regardless.

Craig Gordon v BOLTON WANDERERS

Sometimes, as a goalkeeper, you're better off lucky than good, and this save from Jerzy Dudek certainly features a little bit of both, but it saves Liverpool an extra-time defeat to AC Milan and signals the downfall of Andriy Schevchenko's career.

Jerzy Dudek v AC MILAN

Next, we head back to the Champions League and Lyon v Barcelona, where Gregory Coupet produces this early on to deny Barca.

Gregory Coupet v BARCELONA

It's been a long time since England had two better goalkeepers than these final two. The first of whom will always be remembered as the best, and for reasons such as this.

Gordon Banks v BRAZIL

Good goalkeepers will take that little bit of luck, but there was certainly none of that here. This is better than world class from former Arsenal keeper David Seaman and it is impossible to keep off such a list.

David Seaman v SHEFFIELD UNITED

A well deserved number one in my opinion.
