With the controversies surrounding the departure of Chris Hughton, who is likely to replace the former Spurs defender in the hot seat at St James' Park?
The first name you would think of would be Alan Shearer, after his brief spell at the helm 18 months ago, but he couldn't prevent them from relegation. This time, the situation might be more appealing.

With Ashley stating he's looking for someone more experienced than Hughton, it seems as though the imminent return of the former England striker may have to be put on hold, at least for now.
Elsewhere, I consider Martin O'Neill to be a real challenger, after five months out of the game since his resignation from Aston Villa, but he left there because he didn't have control over his team or signings. That may be different at Newcastle, but whether anyone can gain Ashley's full support is debatable.

Given O'Neill's record, however, of taking Villa consecutively into the top 6 and Europe, Ashley may fancy his chances should the 58-year-old fancy making the move up north.
Another question has to be raised about Alan Pardew, who failed to turn around the situation at Southampton and is said to have had another job lined up for numerous weeks. You wonder whether he is a realistic target given he has been out of the top flight for nearly five years. Would Ashley take another gamble? It seems unlikely, in my eyes.

So, who will take over in the Toon hot-seat? I wouldn't fancy it. Post your views below.
